St Magnus provides recovery care pathways aimed at maximising quality of life by helping to maintain functional abilities and optimising both mental and physical health. An important feature of St Magnus is the existence of a number of different care environments within the grounds, from the Low Secure Unit through to the Locked Ward Service.
The clinical teams at St Magnus can thus signpost and provide patients with a clear and identifiable Recovery Pathway so that patients can be placed within the appropriate environment at the right time for them. As their condition improves/ changes, we can assess if another ward is more suitable for their newly identified care needs. The ethos of St Magnus is the delivery of individualised person-centred care in an environment that is safe, structured and respectful of each individual. Treatment begins with a comprehensive and holistic assessment of each patient’s mental health, physical health and security needs. This involves a thorough assessment of behavioural risks, mental health-related risks, physical health risks (e.g. falls, nutritional problems), and also a forensic risk assessment for those who have committed offences or are at risk of committing offences in the future.
Following a pre-admission assessment, a diagnosis and formulation of the patient’s needs is made. This is used to inform, direct and plan individualised treatment and care plans based on evidence-based practice. The principles of the Care Programme Approach (CPA) are applied throughout the therapeutic process, thus enabling the involvement of patients, individuals and agencies relevant to the patient’s care. The participation of carers and family members is encouraged at all stages of the process.
The progress and outcome of the treatments and care provided are regularly monitored and assessed. Both clinical judgement and structured standardised validated outcome measures and scales are used for this purpose. Regular auditing of the treatments, care and services against local and national standards are carried out.
